GLOSSARY OF TERMS

BOW

The forward part of the craft.

CHINE

The intersection of the bottom and side of a “V” bottom craft.

CLEAT

A fitting through which an anchor or mooring line is led.

COCKPIT

Open area in the deck where the craft is handled.

DISPLACEMENT

The weight of water displaced by a floating vessel thus the crafts weight.

DRAFT

The depth of water it draws.

FREEBOARD

Minimum distance from the surface of the water to gunwale.

GUNWALE

The upper edge of the vessel’s sides.

HULL

Main body of the vessel.

KEEL

The centerline of the vessel, the backbone.

ROWLOCK

Device serving as a fulcrum for the oar.

SHEER

The curvature towards the rear and front of the vessel.

STRINGER

A long horizontal member in the structural framework running for and aft.

TRANSOM

Stern cross section.
