Warning
Building wooden boats can become an addiction. No sooner than it is in the water and you will be thinking of your next creation.
Boat Building Experiences for All Ages
At Form and float our aspiration is to introduce people of all ages to the world of boat building where a can do attitude can get you out on the water in your own craft whether paddling in a river, rowing in a pond or fishing in the sea.
At Form and Float we would like beginners, families, schools and community groups to get involved. It is our mission to support these events in every way possible.
Let’s turn back the clock, get our hands dirty and get involved in something meaningful from the construction through to the application. When you build your craft it will be uniquely yours there will never be two the same
“RACA”
- R – Respect the water
- A – Always wear a life jacket
- C – Check the weather forecast
- A – Act responsibly
- Form and float cannot be held responsible for the final product. These craft have all been extensively tested and if built as per instruction will perform as intended.
- Due to the cost and construction method they are not designed to be left outside exposed to the elements for long periods of time. It is important to rinse down after use and store or cover.
- The best materials have been supplied and all plywood is Maranti marine ply. (BS10988)
- The catamaran and dinghy could be skinned in a light roving cloth and be faired back. This is a little daunting if you have not done it before. If in fact you wish to go down this road contact Form and Float and they will navigate you through the process.
Why?
The founder of this small bespoke company has been around boats all his life. Self taught in all areas he has built from 2.4meters vessels to 13 meter launches.
Now retired from main stream business he has decided to follow his passion and share his experiences in small craft builds. These comprehensive kitsets have been designed with relative ease of construction and are for amateurs and although some woodworking experience would be useful it is not necessary.
There will always be a bit of discrepancy from build to build due to working with a natural product, wood, especially when bending as it wants to take its natural form.
Persevere, take your time, you will get there. Remember we are here to help.
We are also interested in supporting community groups and schools.
Under certain circumstances, upon the purchase of the kits we are prepared to support these organizations through on site instruction through to the total build process whether it be a kayak a dinghy or a catamaran.
New Zealand has a long rich history of boat building that goes back to the 1800’s and is still a vibrant industry today.
Why don’t you become part of this culture and build your own craft today!
